Description: Pre-algebra is a common name for middle school mathematics.  It is generally required for all students between the seventh and eighth grades.  This course will review and build on arithmetic skills and will further math understanding by studying number theory, integers, and algebraic expressions.  We will review fractions, decimals, and percents.  Basic algebra equations will be taught and practiced, as well as square roots, graphing functions and problem solving.  Students must be proficient with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division operations.  In addition, students must have been introduced to operations in fractions, decimals and percents.  The main objective of pre-algebra is to prepare the student for the study of Algebra I.

Students will not be allowed to use a calculator.

Course: IEW I

(Intended to be taken in conjunction with Analytical Grammar I, this course is designed for 6th and 7th graders but it is also available for 8th and 9th graders who may be weak in writing and grammar.)

Description: In this course, students will be taught composition writing with structure and style through an in-depth study of the Institute for Excellence in Writing program as well as a methodical approach to vocabulary development utilizing Greek and Latin roots. Some grammar and proofreading skills will also be taught as they relate to writing assignments. Topics covered in the class include writing from key word outlines, summarizing references, narrative stories, a short research report, formal essays, creative writing, poetry and critiques. IEW utilizes a highly structured method of instruction and parental involvement is critical to the success of the student. Parents should expect to sit in on classes early on to learn the IEW method so they can support their children at home as they complete their weekly writing assignments. In addition to monitoring their child’s progress, parents will be expected to assist them with proofreading and revisions.

Description: This course is a continuation of IEW I and is designed for students who are comfortable with the elements of style and models of structure utilized by the Institute for Excellence in Writing. Students should already know basic paragraph structure, be able to use “openers” to create varied sentence patterns and have an understanding of “dress-ups” that improve word choice. More advanced writing skills will be the focus of this class, which will cover summarizing references, narrative stories, research reports utilizing the MLA format, formal essays and reports, creative writing, supporting thesis statements, persuasive writing, and critiques of literature. Students will continue their study of vocabulary from Greek and Latin roots. Some grammar and proofreading will be taught in the context of writing assignments. Parental involvement is critical to the success of the student. Middle School Science


Course: Investigative Science

(designed for 6th and 7th grade students)

Description: This course is a hands-on approach to solving problems in the area of science for middle school students.  It is designed to allow students to investigate God’s creation using their area of giftedness.  The course is based on science process skills that will bring them to logical conclusions.  This type of science is widely accepted and assessed through national exams because it follows the National Science Standards.  It will cover various areas of exploratory middle school science including:  Life Science, physical Science and Earth and Space Science.  Students will be taught to keep a science notebook for their observations and collection of data.  They will learn how to compile and analyze their data with graphs, charts and illustrations, and summarize their conclusions in a clear and understandable way.  Topics include flight, rocketry, sea life, environment, insects, kitchen chemistry, machines and many others.  There will be no textbook required.  Students will be given lab packets for each session.  They will also be evaluated using their lab notebooks and quarterly evaluations.

Course: Geometry

Description: The main goal of Geometry is to develop an understanding of what we call Euclidean geometric structures and apply the resulting theorems and formulas to address meaningful problems. This course will develop the students’ reasoning skills as well as their ability to use logic to prove theorems and justify conclusions. Students will extend their knowledge of algebra and geometry to trigonometry.  The course uses algebra to reinforce geometric concepts, definitions, postulates and theorems.  Students will cover topics such as congruency and similarity of triangles; quadrilaterals, parallel lines, circles, area and volume of solids, and right triangle trigonometry, area and volume of solids.   Proofs will be included but not overwhelmingly.

This course introduces students to literature analysis through the study of short stories, classic novels, and poetry while also providing them an opportunity to explore a variety of writing styles.  Students will become familiar with literary genres, examine literary devices, and work with literary terms. Through weekly writing assignments, students will also explore a variety of writing styles including expository essays, short stories, poetry, news writing, and opinion pieces. Description: The course gives a science foundation that deals directly with the physical forces of God’s creation and how they relate here on earth and to the universe. Description: This is a college-prep biology course that provides a detailed introduction to the methods and concepts of general biology. Heavily emphasizing the vocabulary of biology and word roots, it provides the student with a strong background in the scientific method, the five-kingdom classification scheme, microscopy, biochemistry, cellular biology, molecular and Mendelian genetics, the creation model of origins, the evolutionary model of origins, dissections, and ecosystems. Course: Honors Chemistry with Lab

Description: This high school course is designed to give a foundational and academic background in chemistry for those students who plan to go on to college. Course: Spanish I

Course: Government From and Economic and Financial Market Perspective (Offered in 2012-2013 1st hour)

Course Description: Semester one (August – December) will focus on Government and Personal Finance

Semester two (January – May) will focus on Economics and Financial Markets


Course Emphasis: Curriculum will be progressive, fast paced and comprehensive at a very high level (beyond text book). Target student: Juniors and Seniors. Beginning with a foundation on personal banking, budgeting and savings, the two semester course moves quickly into the roles of the banking system, the U.S. Federal Reserve Bank system, monetary and fiscal policies of the U.S., and the three branches of government on the economy and financial markets. Students will conclude the course (during semester two) with an investment simulation designed to test understanding of course content and to provide a practical application of the same. Biblically-based financial principles for life will be established for each participant.

Course: Worldview (Not offered in 2011-2012)  This course will rotate every other year with Logic

Course Description: This high school course is designed to help students develop a proper understanding of the Christian worldview. This class will be divided into three parts. In the first part students will have the opportunity to study various world views while comparing and contrasting them to the Christian worldview. In the second third of this course students will evaluate and learn how to deal with common objections to the Christian worldview. In the final third of this course students will explore a number of issues dealing with Christian Apologetics. During this time students will learn how to communicate and defend their faith with gentleness and respect.

Course: Logic

Course Description:

Our ability to think and reason is a gift from God. The goal of this class is to help students reason more carefully and refute faulty thinking in a way that honors the Lord. The first part of this class covers logical terms and definitions, statements and relationships, syllogisms, arguments in Normal English, and informal fallacies.The second portion of this class will cover propositional logic, formal proofs and truth trees.
After completing this class the student should be able to write more clearly, have more fruitful conversations, and be able to identify logical fallacies in their own arguments as well as the arguments of others.

Course: Drawing

Course Description: We will explore the art of drawing as a learned skill. Whether you are a beginner or an avid artist, this course will expand your capabilities by teaching you to draw what you see instead of what you perceive.
