Instructor Biographies


Elise Aleman has an A.S. Degree in illustration from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale. With over 20 years experience in the graphics field, Elise currently oversees and writes the children’s curriculum for Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale. Her passion is making the Bible real and relevant to children, and she believes in raising the next generation to know that the Bible is a true and historical account of our beginning, dependable for our growth now and a reliable account of our future. Elise is a single mom with a 17 year-old son. Her style is innovative, colorful and fun. She enjoys reading, traveling, scuba-diving and has a new interest in gardening.

Gaye Beisel has a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, Tennessee.  She is a Florida state certified teacher, and has over eight years experience teaching in public and private schools here in Florida before starting to home educate her two sons.  While home educating, she maintained a home business which included the teaching of various math and science courses, tutoring, standardized testing, and providing evaluations to the home school community.  She has been an active member of Parkridge Baptist Home Schoolers and has served on the Steering Committee.  The last two years Gaye has been the middle school math and science teacher wit the ACE program at Westminister Academy.  Gaye has been married to Jeff for 26 years and has two boys who both home schooled from kindergarten through 12th grade.  Matthew, their oldest, is attending New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary working on a his MDiv.   Nathan, their youngest, just graduated from FSU and is planning on pursuing a law degree.  Jeff and Gaye are very involved with Parkridge Baptist Church.

Cathy Guynes has been teaching for 10 years. She was born in New Jersey and moved to South Florida over 14 years ago where she quickly became involved in the Spanish-speaking community. She has been coordinating the Spanish/English interpreting/translation team at First Baptist at Weston for 10 years. She graduated from FIU with a Bachelor’s Degree in Spanish, with a minor in translation, as well as certificates in both interpretation and translation. She teaches both Spanish and English to students from all ages and positions in life, ranging from children in grammar school to busy business executives. Before settling into teaching, Cathy obtained an A.S. degree in Animal Science and worked as a veterinary technician before raising her four children. She draws from that extensive experience and brings energy and enthusiasm to the classroom. Having learned a second language as an adult, she has a unique perspective into the needs of her students. Cathy is married to Joe, who is currently pursuing his Masters of Divinity degree and is church administrator. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family, horseback riding, and running.

Patrick J. Kelly has been engaged in the financial services industry for nearly 30 years. He holds a degree in Economics (distinguished), has served as the President and CEO of Citibank/U.S./Southeast Division and as the Managing Director & Principal of one of the largest Broker-Dealer (Top 3) businesses in the United States. He has an extensive background in banking, capital markets and business management. Mr. Kelly is a member of Riverside Christian Fellowship.

Carol Moore holds a B.A. degree in education from Bryan College in Dayton, Tennessee, as well as an M.Ed. from Florida Atlantic University.  She is state certified in six areas, including  English, history, reading, and education of the gifted.  Carol  has 31 years of experience, most of them  at Westminster Academy in Fort Lauderdale.  Her most recent experience is in teaching medieval history and literature in the middle school classical studies program.

Carol received the Lord as her personal savior through the ministry of Child Evangelism Fellowship, and was raised in Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church.  She has been married to Paul for 38 years, and has two married daughters and four grandchildren under four.   Besides spoiling the grand babies, she loves to read, do crossword puzzles, swim, sew, and cross-stitch.

Courses: Tutoring for both Middle School and High School Students in Grammar, Composition, and Science at CEDAR.

Miguel Benetiz Jr. earned his B.A. in Interdisciplinary Social Sciences with a minor in Anthropology from Florida Atlantic University.  He is currently working toward his M.A. in Christian Apologetics through Biola University.  Miguel has  a passion for equipping students to always be prepared to give a defense for the hope they have in Jesus Christ.  Miguel has had the opportunity to be a guest speaker for youth groups, adult education classes, and the radio giving a defense for a proper Christian Worldview.  He is married to Daniela Guevara.

Tom DeRosa is the Founder and Executive Director of Creation Studies Institute (www.creationstudies.org). He is a passionate speaker, and author. Tom has published an easy-to-understand book that shows evolution to be an idea in disarray entitled, “Evidence for Creation,” and another book that exposes the catastrophic results of evolution called, “Evolution’s Fatal Fruit: How Darwin’s Tree of Life Brought Death to Millions.” Tom is now involved producing creation based elementary age curriculum, “Investigate the Possibilities”. Tom majored both in Education and Chemistry and received his Masters Degree from Florida Atlantic University. For twenty years Tom was an Adjunct Professor of Chemistry at Broward College. And for over twenty five years he has hosted the radio program, Genesis Connection, which is now heard on Reach FM daily. Tom’s hobbies are reading, sports, outdoor activities and chess. Tom is the father of 3 girls, and the grandfather of 4. Tom’s wife, Linda, is a pediatric nurse.

Terri Haeffner graduated from Trinity International University in Deerfield, IL in 1992 with a major in English/Secondary Education. She received her M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction from National Louis University in 1995. She has teaching experience at Westlake Academy in Gurnee, IL, and Dade Christian School in Miami, FL.  Courses of instruction have included World Literature, American Literature, British Literature, Speech I, Debate, and a Grammar Lab at Westminster Academy where she was part of the faculty since 1997. Terri has been married to her husband, Bob, for 16 years. They are the proud parents of four children: Kent, age 14; A.J. and Brett, age 13; and Katie, age 11. Watching her children compete in athletics provides plenty of entertainment value in her life. When time allows, she enjoys swimming, biking,and sewing. Other favorite activities include reading and playing board games with her family.

Shelly Pond earned her bachelor’s degree in Journalism from the University of Florida in 1987. As a staff writer for the Boca Raton News, she covered the police beat then became the education writer. Later Shelly worked in the field of public relations. After becoming a mother in 1993, Shelly continued as a freelance writer until she began home schooling her three children in 1997. Since then, Shelly has been active in the home school community and 4-H. She previously served on the steering committee for the Broward County Parent Support Group and organized a newspaper club in which she taught journalism and helped produce Kids to Kids. She teaches essay writing classes based on the Institute for Excellence in Writing program at Home Education Enrichment Day (HEED) and has taught creative writing classes to elementary-age students at Fine Arts Day (FAD) in Boca Raton. When time allows, Shelly enjoys sailing, camping, and hiking.
