Private Piano

Students will need to own a well-tuned piano. Students are expected to practice regularly. Students will learn music theory and piano repertoire.


Scales, exercises, sight-reading and repertoire in diverse styles of music will be taught. Self-discipline is required in order to make progress. Lessons are held weekly. Music books will need to be purchased individually depending on the student’s level of playing. Beginners are welcome!


Levels: Beginner to Advanced

Duration: 17 weeks per semester

Lesson Frequency: Weekly 40-minute lessons

Recital: Public performance at end of each semester


Lesson Format

  • Private Instruction Only (No group classes)

  • Lesson Duration: 40 minutes per week

  • Practice Expectations:

    • Beginner: 15 minutes/day

    • Intermediate: 30 minutes/day

    • Advanced: 45 minutes/day

  • Practice Log: Encouraged for all levels


Attendance & Make-Up Policy

  • Attendance is recorded after each lesson

  • Cancellation Policy:

    • Notify instructor at least 24 hours in advance via email

  • Make-Up Lessons:

    • 1 excused make-up per semester (for illness or emergency only)

    • Unexcused absences will not be rescheduled

    • Make-ups depend on teacher availability and are not guaranteed


Beginner

  • Materials: Faber Piano Adventures (Basic or Accelerated); Sight Reading, Technique & Theory books


Intermediate

  • Materials: Simplified classical repertoire (Kabalevsky, Gurlitt, Sonatinas), technique books


Advanced

  • Materials: Full classical works (Beethoven, Chopin Preludes, Bartók,Schumann); Czerny, Hanon

  • Tuition and Fees

    • Tuition Fee: $750.00 per semester

    • Paid Security Guard Fee for Safety of Students: $25.00

Course Objectives

  • Build a strong technical and musical foundation

  • Develop sight-reading, ear training, and theory knowledge

  • Explore personal creativity through composition and improvisation

  • Prepare and perform two contrasting pieces for a public recital

Curriculum by Level

Beginner

  • Skills: Keyboard geography, rhythm basics, note reading, correct posture

  • Creative Work: Simple composition and improvisation

  • Recital Repertoire: 2 short, contrasting pieces


Intermediate

  • Skills: Pedaling basics, phrasing, major/minor scales, broken chords

  • Recital Repertoire: Minimum 2 pieces, focusing on stylistic variety and expression


Advanced

  • Skills: Scales/arpeggios in all keys, advanced pedaling, tone control

  • Musicianship: Score interpretation, historical and theoretical context

  • Recital Repertoire: 2 polished, contrasting works (memorized or near-memorized)


Theory, Ear Training & Composition

  • Integrated weekly (approx. 5–10 minutes per lesson)

  • Topics include: Intervals, chords, key signatures, rhythmic dictation

  • Encouragement of beginner composition and guided creative work


Recital Information

  • Requirement: Perform 2 memorized (or nearly memorized) pieces

  • Recital Date: Announced during the third week of December

  • Preparation: Includes mock performances and guidance on stage presence and confidence
